Ornellaia wines are Italian wines produced in Bolghery, Tuscany and one of the most prestigious and awarded wines in Italy. Their style is called "super Tuscan" which indicates the Bordeaux-style blend for these wines. Ornellaia was established by Marchese Lodovico Antinori of the Antinori family, behind one of Italy's most historic negociant firms, with the support of winemaker Tibor Gal.
The Ornellaia estate lies hidden in the foothills around Bolgheri that face the Mediterranean coast. The cool maritime breeze caresses this exceptional Estate and its surrounding olive groves throughout the summer months. During the winter the hills give protection from the cold northern winds. The vineyards of the estate were planted in 1981, producing the first vintage in 1985. A modern winery was built in 1987, and a second 56-hectare (140-acre) property was later added, Bellaria, situated north of Bolgheri. In addition to Ornellaia, Merlot grapes from the 17 acre Masseto vineyard have since 1986 been produced as a varietal wine, initially simply as 'Merlot' now by the name Masseto. Le Volte, first released in 1991, is a 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend.
